Stoke Poges Church, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

The inspiration for Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” is the subject of tonight’s Cemetery of the Week: http://cemeterytravel.com/2014/02/05/cemetery-of-the-week-123-stoke-poges-churchyard/

The postcard is a tinted photograph which dates to prior to 1924, when the spire was removed from the tower. The church is now kept clear of ivy, which was damaging the brick exterior.

Now the thing that looks like the back of a bench in the lower right corner. That’s a wooden grave marker, according to another photo of the churchyard.
